Translated from: “ar-Radd al-Mutalattif” footnote 2, pages 2-3
at-Tamyee`: An expression that has become famous amongst the later generation from amongst those who take the path of harshness and extremism from those who are attributed to the Sunnah. They mention it in instances of disparagement of some of Ahl as-Sunnah that they haven’t dared to make Tabdee` of (declare an innovator). They intend by it “lenient” or “softness”, but this statement is incorrect both from the perspective of the language and the Sharee`ah.
As far as the linguistically: the article “mayya`” (ميع) is not used in the language except for liquids. Al-Jawharee said, “Al-Mayya` is the root of the butter has melted, it yumee3 when it melts, and May` is the flow of when something is poured.” as-Sihaah (2/187) And inMaqayees al-Lugha (5/232): “The thing Maa`: if it flows on the face of the earth, and Maa’i` is everything that melted.” From here we can see the error of using it to refer to leniency or softness in the Religion.
As far as the Sharee`ah: Then this is an innovated expression in the science of Jarh (disparagement) no evidence indicates it nor is there anything inherited from the Salaf. I had denied this expression over ten years ago in a discussion with one of those who used it to refer to one of the people who is associated with the Sunnah, and I said to him, “This expression is innovated, and its meaning is not straightforward; so do you have any Salaf in this?” He said, “No, but they attribute me to extremism.”?!?!?!?!
And one of the researchers benefited when he searched for the origin of this term and he did not find a foundation for it in the speech of the Earlier Scholars, until he reached that the first person to use it was Sayyid Qutb in some of his books.
After the research was done, the matter was solidified because this phrase did not appear in the books of the Earlier Scholars. Rather, it was repeated often in the books of Sayyid Qutb and some of the Muslim Brotherhood, then it spread between those who were affected by them from the contemporaries.
And from amongst some of the examples of it being present in Sayyid Qutb’s words is in the book In the Shade of the Qur’an when he said (2/730): “Their view of this issue in this way has a very bigtamyee` in the reality of Imaan.” And he says (2/734): “Ahl al-Kitaabtoday wants to do tamyee` to this reality.” And he says, (2/941): “Other than this expression is tamyee` to the creed, and deception to the soul.” Also refer to: (2/914, 920, 940, 3/1403).
And ash-Sha`raawi says, “And this resolves the attempt of the kuffaarto do tamyee` on the issue of Imaan.” Tafseer ash-Sha`raawi (8/4911)
Therefore, the effect of Sayyid Qutb and the Muslim Brotherhood on those who use this phrase has become clear. And this is quite a predicament for the companions of this way: that their salaf in what they accuse their brothers of is Sayyid Qutb and others from the Muslim Brotherhood.
